A debut album that feels like the raw energy of a live performance has been vacuum-sealed right into the record. The overwhelming energy radiates from 20-year-old Rory Gallagher and his formidable rhythm section. Recorded in a London studio in just one day between grueling tours, this recording vividly captures the band’s electrifying stage presence. The term “blues rock” alone cannot fully capture the appeal of this album. Led by legendary guitarist Rory Gallagher, Taste’s debut is a surprisingly sophisticated work that perfectly fuses Chicago blues, acoustic folk, and proto-heavy metal. Rory’s guitar playing isn’t just intense. The fluid acoustic slide guitar he displays on Lead Belly’s “Leaving Blues” and the delicate, intricate fingerpicking on “Hail” possess a beauty that will make you sigh involuntarily. On the other hand, the seven-minute “Sugar Mama,” with its resonant, weighty call-and-response, showcases the very essence of the sticky, clinging blues. The album concludes with a country cover of “I’m Moving On,” which infuses the original with a punk-like sense of urgency. The fact that Eric Clapton chose them to open for his band Cream’s farewell concert speaks volumes about this band’s talent. While Rory Gallagher’s genius on guitar is undeniable, it is the rock-solid groove of the rhythm section—bassist Richard McCracken and drummer John Wilson—that truly makes this album shine.
