Formed in France in 1973 around the talented pianist and composer Cyril Verdo, Clear Light is both Verdo’s solo project and a progressive rock band. Having received a classical music education from a young age, he joined the rock band “BABYLON” in 1971 and began his career in the rock music scene in earnest. Inviting various guest musicians for each album, they released works showcasing a wide range of musical styles—including their signature lyrical phrases, classical/symphonic arrangements, and electronic sounds—and continue to enjoy strong support from dedicated progressive rock fans to this day. Now, Clear Light’s four albums released in the early 1970s, along with their latest album from 2014, make their debut in a new, Japan-exclusive UHQCD/paper sleeve edition! This third album was recorded in 1977 with Didier Lockwood (vn), former violinist of the French progressive rock band Magma, as a guest artist. The psychedelic and trip-music elements have faded, and the album features a refined symphonic rock sound that masterfully blends jazz, psychedelia, new age, and pop throughout, centered around Verdo’s acoustic piano. Ian Bellamy’s (vo) soulful, passionate vocals, along with Verdo, Francis Mandin (keyboards), and Tim Blake (keyboards) of Gong—a fellow French psychedelic/progressive rock band from their hometown who had appeared on their first album—this masterpiece delivers a breathtaking symphonic sound that marks a clear evolution and leap forward from their previous work.
