First time out! Richter's valuable repertoire from his mature years sees the light of day! The La Roque d'Antheron Music Festival, which has been held since 1981, is an event attended by great pianists from all over the world, and Richter appeared frequently. This is a live performance from August 6, 1985 at the Parc des Chateaux de Florent, from the remarkable collection of the INA (Institut National d'Audiovisual de France). The only other works on this disc, Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 6, are rare and precious in terms of Richter's dichotomy, so the fact that such a treasure has seen the light of day is most welcome. The three pieces from Hindemith's Piano Sonata No. 2 and Shostakovich's Preludes were performed several times in 1985, the former live in Moscow on the Doremi disc, and the latter on the Radio France recording. The casually played Shostakovich is superb. The Shostakovich is superb, with infinite depth. The Webern Variations are full of color and nuance in every little note, drawing you in and bringing you back to Richter. Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 6 is a memorable work that Richter gave its public premiere in Moscow in November 1940.Prokofiev himself had given the first broadcast performance of this piece, but after hearing Richter's piano performance, Prokofiev requested that it be performed, and it was a great success.
