Description:

Jansons & the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks at the 2015 Lucerne Easter FestivalDvorak's Great Stabat MaterFilmed footage of Jansons & the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks performing Dvořák's Stabat Mater at the 2015 Lucerne Easter Festival. The recording comes shortly after the duo performed the same piece at their home base in Munich, the Hercules Saal, prior to this performance. Stabat Mater" is a masterpiece born from Dvořák's grief over the loss of his first and second sons. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Kubelík have performed this work together, and the performance has been passed down through the generations as a highly musical and moving masterpiece. Stabat Mater (Our Lady of Sorrows)" is based on a poem about the Virgin Mary's sorrow for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The melody begins with the beautiful and sad first piece, "The Virgin Sinking in Sorrow," which expresses Dvorak's grief-stricken heart, then gradually a glimmer of hope appears, and the Amen is sung powerfully with glorious echoes in the final piece. Although the energy of the work is overwhelmingly sad, Jansons creates music with tremendous centripetal force toward the final ray of light. The soloists include Canadian soprano Erin Wall, Japan's proud mezzo-soprano Mihoko Fujimura, tenor Christian Elsner, who will appear in the "Ninth" during the Berlin Philharmonic's Japan tour in 2016, and Chinese bass Lian Li, who has performed in opera houses around the world. Together with the finest soloists, they give a moving performance. King International
