Description:
Hungarian-born pianist Annie Fischer (1914–1995) displayed musical talent from an early age; it is said that she performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at the age of eight. In 1923, she enrolled at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where she studied under renowned masters such as Ernst von Dohnányi. Although she had already attracted international attention while still a student, her victory at the “Liszt International Piano Competition” in 1933 added another brilliant chapter to her career. Her exceptional technique and expressiveness were praised even by the great Sviatoslav Richter, but unfortunately, because so few of her performances have been preserved, her true value remains difficult to fully appreciate. One of her best-known recordings is the Schumann and Liszt concertos with her friend Klemperer; however, the recording featured here is a live performance from several years earlier. Compared to Klemperer’s weighty style, Kaibel’s flexible accompaniment fully brings out her expansive musical qualities. As for Beethoven’s sonatas, her complete set from the 1970s (which she disliked and therefore never allowed to be released during her lifetime) is well known, but this recording predates that by nearly 20 years.
