Description:

Newly re-pressed LP edition of the long-running piano work! Algerian pianist and composer Mustafa Skandrani's "Istikbal and Improvisation" (1965) is a unique album of improvised piano variations on Andalusian folk melodies. A masterpiece of pure music, timeless, serene, and limpid. Andalusian classical music was considered heretical because of the way Scandrani played the piano, a method that was almost as if it had been pioneered by a pioneer. The reason for this heresy is that before Scandrani, there was no such thing as a solo piano performance at Andalusian music concerts, and the idea of playing "Istikbal" (one of the styles of Andalusian court music) on the piano was unthinkable to anyone else, and was controversial at the time. Algerian classical music is a mixture of Andalusian court music, which originated in the Arab and Islamic dynasties of Spain, and Turkish classical music, and is characterized by the integration of Eastern and Western cultures, with influences from the West, indigenous Africans, and Jews. Istikbal" is a prelude to the "nauba" (or "nuva") style of court music suite, and has several modes (types). In this work, one mode is first played and presented thematically, followed by a set of variations, for a total of nine sets of modes. The easy-to-understand appeal of this work is the graceful intersection of Orient/West/Africa on the keyboard, where the sounds produced from the piano become a single delicate line that moves back and forth between the East and West worlds. Newly remastered, new cutting, inserts included (in English and Japanese).
