Description:

A new SACD project based on ETERNA’s original analog tapes is underway! Three Mahler works—masterpieces recorded by Zanderling toward the end of the analog era—are being revived in their ultimate form! Reissued through ideal digitization and mastering. Mastering was performed exclusively in the analog domain, followed by direct conversion to DSD! Toward the end of the analog recording era, all three of Kurt Sanderling’s Mahler works—recorded in 1979 and 1983 for the former Eterna label—are being reissued in 2018 as the world’s first SACD releases. Sourced from the original analog master tapes located in Germany, this three-disc import set is presented in the order the recordings were made. We are releasing these Mahler performances—which staked the prestige of the former East Germany at the time—with renewed sound quality in the best possible form. Recorded after he stepped down as chief conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, these sessions appear to have been meticulously prepared, resulting in albums that were highly polished in both performance and sound quality for their time. Although Zanderling later re-recorded Symphony No. 9 in a studio session, these remain the only recordings of the other two symphonies. Characterized by a grand and majestic style, these performances attracted attention from the moment they were released. In particular, since recordings of the third version of the Cook edition of Symphony No. 10 were still rare at the time, it is still fresh in our memory that this Zanderling recording was widely regarded as the standard worldwide for a time and laid the foundation for the subsequent boom. Although these recordings have been reissued numerous times in the CD era, Zanderling’s original, flowing expression was somewhat diminished by the somewhat flat sound quality of the CDs, and there may have been a perception that the performances lacked variety and were considered rather subdued. However, this reissue revives Zanderling’s authentic conducting style, which sought meticulous attention to detail and a wide range of expression. As a result, listeners will come to appreciate that this was a Mahler performance that combined both extreme delicacy and boldness. While retaining the solid, no-nonsense sound of the former East German era, listeners can now enjoy an even more precise performance. (1/2)
