The six symphonies by Carl Nielsen, Denmark's national composer, each with its own unique look and extremely distinctive sound, occupy an important place in 20th century music along with Sibelius' seven symphonies as rare orchestral works from Northern Europe. For Paavo Järvi, Nielsen's complete symphonies, recorded over a four-year period between 2009 and 2013, join Bruckner (five symphonies already released on RCA) and Mahler (the complete Mahler symphonies on film) as important works in his repertoire of Nordic music. This recording of Nielsen's complete symphonies is one of the milestones he set during his tenure as principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (2006-2014). Pavo's interpretation is a joy to listen to, with its sharp rhythmic handling, cool lyricism, and masculine dynamism with a symphonic sense of structure. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra's functional and powerful bottom line, which is typical of German broadcast orchestras, is also worth listening to. Only No. 5 was previously recorded with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, but the other five pieces are Pavo's first recordings. This is the birth of a masterful performance that goes beyond the anniversary year and aims for the future.
