Description:
Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore: A quiet, profound recording of “magic,” where voice and harp seem to melt together in the heavens Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore are two leading figures in contemporary ambient and experimental music. Having each built their own unique worlds as solo artists, they have arrived at *Tragic Magic*, a collaboration that feels almost inevitable, born out of their long-standing friendship and history of performing together. Julianna Barwick is a composer who has earned high acclaim for her ambient vocal works, which weave together her voice through multi-tracking to evoke a sense of prayer and ritual. Meanwhile, Mary Lattimore has garnered support across genres—from indie to ambient and experimental—with compositions that blend the classical harp with a minimalist, contemporary sensibility. While both were active as solo artists around the world, they performed together in Japan in 2019, leaving a strong impression on the Japanese audience. Through subsequent tours and collaborations, they cultivated a “musical telepathy” that allowed them to naturally understand each other’s breathing and timing. This album was produced at the Philharmonie de Paris, where they were granted special access to the Musée de la Musique’s collection of historical instruments. The production period lasted just nine days. The album was co-produced by Trevor Spencer (Fleet Foxes, Beach House). Having arrived in Paris immediately after the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, the duo held onto those experiences and emotions as they engaged in a series of sessions centered on improvisation. Mary Lattimore selected several historical harps built between 1728 and 1873, imbuing the music with the layers of time inherent in the instruments themselves. Julianna Barwick uses iconic analog synthesizers such as the Roland Jupiter and Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, along with her voice, to imbue the work with a sense of floating and spirituality. Comprising seven tracks, this album is a quiet, meditative piece of music in which voice, harp, and electronic sounds engage in a free dialogue. Rather than depicting sorrow and loss head-on, the album crystallizes the very process of accepting them and guiding them toward transformation into sound. Intimacy rooted in friendship, a sense that is both earthly and cosmic, and the power of art passed down across generations. As a work that encompasses all of these elements, *Tragic Magic* holds a special place in the duo’s career.
