Hyperion’s 30th Anniversary Album A collection of British secular choral works performed by a renowned choir under its new music director. World premiere recording “Finzi: Requiem da Camera,” the 30th album on the Hyperion label by the prestigious Trinity College Choir of Cambridge, is now available. This album, which also marks the debut of Stephen Grahl as the new music director of the Cambridge Trinity College Choir, features three large-scale secular choral works by the British composer Gerald Finzi. All are world premiere recordings based on new arrangements. Composed between the 1930s and 1940s, these works reflect on the transience of human life and the pursuit of happiness through Finzi’s unique musical style. The album combines a work that is outwardly brilliant and festive (“For Saint Cecilia”) with a darker, more introspective piece (“Requiem da Camera”). For Saint Cecilia was originally written for tenor solo, chorus, and full orchestra, but in this recording, it is performed using Robert Gower’s organ arrangement of the orchestral parts. Gower has also rearranged Finzi’s orchestral parts for organ in the Christmas piece “Peace on Earth,” which Finzi drew inspiration for from his memories of his time at Chosen Hill, a scenic landmark in the Cotswolds. Although the orchestration of Requiem da Camera was unfinished at the time of Finzi’s death, this recording features a new arrangement that combines Christian Alexander’s 2013 completed version with Francis Jackson’s existing organ arrangement. The performance features award-winning soloists Hillary Cronin, Gwylim Bowen, and Florian Stolz. The Cambridge Trinity College Choir’s previously released album of Finzi’s works was praised by Gramophone magazine as a “beautifully crafted disc” by “Trinity at its very best.” Universal Music/IMS
