Light in 17th Century Northern Europe A collection of laments by North German composers and others Ricciardot's lucid words and expression Ensemble Correspondance's quiet instrumental music Founded in 2008 in Lyon under the direction of keyboardist and conductor Sébastien Dosé, Ensemble Correspondances is an ensemble with a repertoire centered on 17th century French religious music and a reputation for energetic performances and recordings, including the rediscovery of works by famous composers. The ensemble has become a leader in the world of French classical music. This new album with Ricciardot, who is in great demand in the world of classical music, follows on the heels of Schütz: The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross SWV478 and Diekmann's Funeral Music (HMM-902350, recorded in 2020). After this Schütz recording, Doce and Ricciardot promised to record more of these laments, and Doce and others are gradually extending their exploration of the composers from northern Germany, who at the end of the 17th century bridged the bustling cities of the Hanseatic League with the court of Stockholm on the opposite shore of the Baltic Sea.At the time, Sweden was looking south rather than presenting its art internationally. This album takes us into the myriad shades of melancholy through works by Swedish, German, and Italian composers. It lifts us up and uplifts us like the misty northern sun that gently colors the winter sky, the last iridescent glow before sunset, or the endless, multicolored northern light. HARMONIAMUNDI
