The Glory and Decline of Louis XIV - A new disc of Les Arts Florissants led by Christie singing about love at the end of the century! William Christie, one of the greatest figures in the world of ancient music, has greatly contributed to the revival of French Baroque music, especially opera and vocal works, and has greatly influenced the current world of ancient music. This album is a collection of songs by 17th century French composers such as Lambert and Charpentier, featuring "Airs de Coeur" (secular songs) that were popular among the French upper classes from the late 16th century to the mid-17th century. The works by Lambert and Charpentier, the main composers of the Yale de Coeur, have the charm of the simple beauty of the early flowering of the French Baroque. All of them are passionately played with melancholy melodies, effectively crossed with low melodies, harmony, and rhythms of violin, viola da gamba, and lute. In particular, Lambert's "Love is suffering (Bien que l'amour...)," which is also the title of the album, is a beautiful piece that best expresses Lambert's graceful and refined characteristics.The album also includes works by F. Couperin, a leading composer of the mid to late French Baroque, Chavansaud de La Barre, organist of Louis XIV's Chapelle attached band, and Honoré Dambruy, a student of Lambert. The composers on this album are divided into two generations, Lambert, La Barre, and Charpentier, who were active during the glory days of the Louis XIV dynasty, and Dambruy and F. Couperin, who were active during the decline of the French Baroque, and contrast them with the most rich period of music and poetry of the time.
