When Sir Georg Solti arrived in Chicago as Music Director in the fall of 1969, he once compared the city and its renowned orchestra to "Sleeping Beauty. Over the next five years, however, it was this ballet, Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring," that revealed just how sensational this new relationship could be. It is known as the recording that, half a century later, still seems to come violently out of the speakers. The recording was made in a single session on May 14, 1974, at the Medina Temple in Chicago. This is the first 45rpm release of the recording, and the high frequency response has been improved to maximize the "intensity and clarity" of the original recording. This is a fascinating yet powerful performance of Stravinsky that deserves to be taken very seriously. Universal Music/IMS
