This is fantastic! This is a monster of a disc that crosses from a modern library full of craftsmanship comparable to Sven Wonder, to ethereal black jazz, to ethno-ambient reminiscent of Don Cherry and Jon Hassell! The album is said to have its origins in the home workshop of Christian Ruggiero, a well-known film and television composer with a passion for old-fashioned recording methods and conventional studio technology. He teamed up with longtime collaborator and like-minded multi-instrumentalist Yannis Panos to produce "Volume 1" by Secular Music Group the old-fashioned way. More specifically, the musicians perform live in the studio to magnetic tape. Musically, the group reflected a common interest in free jazz, library music, and American minimalism, and was completed by key members: guitarist Ted Morcaldi, lead player Greg Lapine, and percussionist Tim Walsh. The group was formed in 1976. Each player brought several sketches to the session, which became the starting point for this improvisation. In that sense, the record is a true collaborative work; Ruggiero recorded it on a vintage tape machine bequeathed to him in honor of a recently deceased friend. The result is a record that combines the pastoral elegance of UK jazz, the austerity of European avant-garde music, the stirring sounds of the grand instrumental ensembles of the 60's and 70's, and the unique blend of the Hampshire & Foat, Natural Information Society, and Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Orchestra led by Matthew Halsall.
