Description:

Yaara Tarr's concept album discloses the diversity of piano music in Europe 100 years ago. Exactly 100 years ago, in 1923, the music world was in a surprisingly complex state: Schoenberg completed his first work for 12 tones in Vienna, musical neoclassicism was celebrated in Paris, composers all over Europe were enthusiastic about American dance styles, public broadcasting began in Berlin in the midst of a political and economic crisis, and radio played a pivotal role in the spread and development of musical culture. In Berlin, public broadcasting began in the midst of a political and economic crisis, and radio played a pivotal role in the spread and development of musical culture. The album "1923," recorded by pianist Yaara Tarr for Sony Classical, is like taking the listener on a magical musical journey back in time to 100 years ago. Based on various studies, Tarr has selected a fascinating selection of works that experience the rich diversity of piano music of the time.Tarr received inspiration for the project from musicologist Tobias Bleek, and while studying the works composed in 1923, he became aware of how important the political, cultural, and media linkages of that year were, and how multifaceted and fascinating the repertoire for the piano I became aware of how important the political, cultural, and media linkages were that year, and how multifaceted and fascinating the repertoire for piano was." The album features works in a variety of styles, but it is clear that there are obvious and implied connections between the works, even if the styles are different. Unusual works include Joseph Matthias Hauer's "Pieces for Piano," a sound recreation of a scenic episode with human and nature themes, based on the words of the poet Friedrich Hölderlin, and "Nirvana," a kind of contemporary ballad by Bloch. Also known as "Heautontimorumenus," Fritz Heinrich Klein's "Machines" depicts a world of human-machine relations, representing "external self-satire" and perhaps the most humorous piece on the album, and is performed by his longtime piano duo partner Andreas Grothuysen joins the group. Also included is a small piece by Janacek, which in its own unique musical language depicts a mirror of the human soul, and a wonderful little dance fantasy by Tansman.
