Bach (1685-1750)

Description:

The "Voice of Bach" Engeljes sings the solace of "death" on his second album of famous cantatas. Maarten Engeljesse, a Dutch countertenor who is now very active in the world of classical music, once again focuses on Bach, following his debut release for Sony Classical last year, "Forgotten Arias" (19075932442), which included Bach arias. This time, as the German album title "Nicht mehr hier = no longer here" suggests, the theme is "death," and the album is centered around three of Bach's famous cantatas, with arias by Buxtehude and Johann Christoph Bach placed at the beginning and end. 'When I sing and listen to Bach's works, I have less fear of death. Bach's music makes me feel that I belong to a larger world, and it helps me get over being lonely. So says Engelches, who, together with German baritone Andreas Wolff and PRJCT Amsterdam, launched the project "Not Here Anymore" on the theme of death, which was recorded following a successful tour of the Netherlands of the same name in the fall of 2019.The works selected are all music that gives the listener comfort and food for thought. Wolff, who also performed with the orchestra, said, "'Death' is like going to sleep at night. When we sleep, we wake up in the morning, but when we die, we wake up in the 'other world. In other words, death, like life, is a beginning. Engelches, together with Wolff and the period instrument ensemble PRJCT Amsterdam, which he formed himself in 2017, reveal the inner spiritual world of each work with their deep and tender song-like music-making, advanced technique, and deep insight into religious and worldviews, resulting in a fresh and moving performance. The result is fresh and moving. <Born in 1984, Maarten Engelches (countertenor) was a boy soprano in the choir for four years, and gained attention in 1995 when he sang the solo in Handel's "Coronation Anthem" at the Haarlem Boys Choir Festival. She also participated as soloist in the recording of Allegri's "Miserere" at the Cathedral in Riga, where she sang superbly; at the age of 16 she switched to countertenor singing, making her debut as alto in the Matthew Passion.Since then, she has performed a wide range of Bach's numerous works as well as operas from the Baroque period, and her reputation has grown exponentially as she continues to work with Ton Koopman. during the fall 2018 visit to Japan by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir conducted by Koopman, she took the alto solo in Bach's Mass in B minor, She captivated us with her soft, delicate, and elongated voice.
