Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the outbreak of the 30 Years War and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. This new recording by the Lauten Company takes a sharp look at the relationship between the disasters of war and music. Wolfgang Kachner and the Lauten Company was founded in 1984 as a lute duo with Kachner and Hans-Werner Appel, and over the past 30 years has focused on bringing the music of the past back to life in the present, unlike so-called period instrument performances. The group is characterized by its diverse musical style, which includes a variety of soloists in its performances. For example, in their concerts, they perform opera arias with orchestra alone, contemporary music by Philip Glass and Piazzolla, and popular music on ancient instruments, thus breaking down the boundaries between ancient and contemporary music. This album traces the accumulation of their performance activities through recordings of baroque music.This album is an attempt at a musical expression of "war and peace" to commemorate this year (2018) being the 400th anniversary of the outbreak of the 30 Years War (1618-1648) and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. It brings together music that has been shaken by war and destruction over a period of more than 300 years, and is divided into four chapters: "Terror," It is divided into four chapters: "Terror," "Catastrophe," "Death," and "Longing. Lamentations by the great Baroque composers Schütz, Hammerschmidt, Scheidt, and others. Then, light melancholic songs by Hollender and Eisler, who were active in Berlin in the 1920s, are sung alternately, satirically and sharply expressing the confusion and anxiety of the postwar period and, at the same time, defiance. Interspersed between them are Satie's piano pieces that tie the narrative together and provide food for thought for the listener.With her exceptionally beautiful voice and clear diction, soprano Dorothee Meals, an essential part of baroque singing, vividly captures the pain and happiness contained in these songs.
