A performance that foreshadows Romanticism, conducted by Laurence Ekilbey, who created an emotional expression by casting Franco Fagioli, a countertenor with overwhelming power and expression, as Cecilio Roman dictator Lucio Silla, his political enemy and exiled former senator, Cecilio's forgiving wife He falls in love with Junia, but she strongly refuses him. Cecilio secretly returns to Rome, where he has a joyful reunion with Junia. The story continues with Cecilia, Silla's sister, and Chinna, his political rival. In the end, Cecilio allows the lovers to marry, pardons all his political enemies, and abdicates the throne... Mozart composed this opera seria in Milan in December 1772, when he was only 17 years old. Yet it contains many of the elements that would become the forerunners of many great operas to come. It is a further development of the "opera seria" that took form in Naples in the late Baroque period, and a free leap from the traditional operatic categories of the time. This work, which foreshadowed Romanticism, shook up the conventions of opera seria and became an even greater success for Mozart, who already had ample experience with dramatic works, and reportedly gave 26 performances. Conductor Laurence Ekilbey, who has created unique programming of Mozart's and Weber's operas in the past, has found a clever way to compose this work, while creating a more emotional expression than ever before. The role of Cecilio is now often sung by mezzo-sopranos, but it was originally written for a castrato. In this performance, the role is sung by Franco Fagioli, a countertenor of overwhelming power and expressiveness.
