In contrast to the program of his two previously released albums (of Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Gershwin, and Debussy, piano and orchestral works), the American-born von Oen, whose performance confirms the resonance between Bach and Beethoven that he found during the pandemic, In honor of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, an album of Beethoven sonatas was planned for early 2020. But the onset of the pandemic radically altered both his plans and his feelings about the music he was performing. From a composer that Owen had never had much interest in, he derives the message of Bach's works for contemporary audiences. I began to worry that I was developing little interest in anything other than the repertoire I normally love to play. Given my own mood at the time and my general pianistic sensibilities, I was not keen to explore the stormy, heroic, romanticism of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. Even the pleasant sensuality of Debussy and Ravel originally held little appeal.This was not a time for emotional subjectivity or poetic fantasy. It needed to be raw and direct, stripped of the non-essential. Most importantly, it had to be universal. Less "I" and more "we." Most of all, it was surprising that the composers who appealed to us were composers with whom we had not previously had a close relationship. One of the more discoveries I was able to make was Johann Sebastian Bach. I studied many of his keyboard works, but rarely played them. I was not a baroque expert. Still, I suddenly remembered that his music was calling to me, and decided that during the pandemic period of missing concerts, with free time to explore new repertoire, I would fill in the problems of Bach's counterpoint norms. while notating a four-voice fugue. this was a brain and finger enabled, but I realized that it was not, however, an academic pursuit.
