Mirga has always had a passion for British music, and for good reason, as he was the music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. His most significant contribution to 20th century British music was the premiere of Britten's "War Requiem" in 1966. Composed in 1940, the three movements of Sinfonia da Requiem for large orchestra are titled after the Latin Requiem Mass and represent a lifetime of pacifism by the 26-year-old composer. Walton's suite Troilus and Cressida was a major project that occupied the composer's later life. Based on an original work by Chalker, the "father of English poetry," this massive opera is characterized by rich emotion and a long sung melody that the composer called "English bel canto."
