Description:
The long-awaited new album by the Italian sister duo Duo Gazzana was formed by sisters (violinist Natasha and pianist Raffaella) born near Rome, Italy. Their latest album, featuring works by Schumann, Grieg, and Kulwitz, is their latest release; their debut album in 2011 featured works by Toru Takemitsu, Hindemith, Janacek, and Silvestrov; their second album in 2014 featured music by Poulenc, Walton, Dallapiccola, Schnittke, and Silvestrov The two have recorded music by modern and contemporary music is their strongest area of expertise. Their previous 2018 recording of works by Ravel, Franck, Ligeti, and Messiaen was "a majestic performance . Both Ravel and Messiaen works by the Gazzana sisters are impressive in their balance" (BBC Music Magazine). Schumann's Violin Sonata No. 1 was written in 1851, at a time when Schumann was beginning to suffer from mental illness, and is seen as an influence on this work. Natasha and Raffaella are dedicated to the dark, rippling theme of its first movement, and play it with a special expressiveness that only they can offer. They also chose to replace the first edition score with the composer's first copy, shedding fresh light on Grieg's final sonata.The "Stalker" suite by Estonian composer Tunu Kulvits (1969- ) is a tribute to Soviet film director Andrei Tarkovsky. It is named after the filmmaker's 1979 classic film "Stalker. Both "Stalker" Suite and "Notturni" are dedicated to the Gazzana sisters, and both recordings are world premieres. Produced by Manfred Eicher, the recording was made in November 2021 in the historic hall Leitstadel in Neumarkt, Germany. Universal Music/IMS
