John Cage’s minimalist music, too, can sometimes be brought to its fullest potential through such approaches. Cage’s “Six Melodies,” originally composed for violin and piano, is performed here on the viol and theorbo. Featuring works by Lee Santana (who also composes), who plays the theorbo here, this album showcases Hille Pearl’s viola da gamba, which makes full use of the instrument’s beautiful, long sustain.
