"The Giant": A Passionate Performance by Rising Star Fabio Luisi Fabio Luisi, a rising star from Italy, was appointed Music Director of the Dresden State Opera in September 2007. Since taking office, he has led the State Opera on a tour of Japan and conducted concert tours with the orchestra. This DVD features live footage from the Munich Gastspiel, a stop on their European tour in April 2008. Mahler’s “Titan” is an intensely passionate performance that leaves the listener with a profound sense of satisfaction. Yet, without losing the beautiful resonance of the Dresden orchestra or the work’s inherent musical freshness, the performance overflows with vibrant sensibility. The orchestra’s beautiful sound, fluid phrasing, and Luigi’s focused and powerful conducting are a must-hear. The DVD also features Margarita Heenleder as soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Her performance is clear and well-structured, brimming with passion and creative insight. The encore features a work by the German contemporary composer Harald Genzmer, who passed away in Munich in December 2007. The bonus footage includes a portrait of Heenleder. Margarita Heenleder received her first lesson from Anna Stadler at the age of five and later honed her skills under the guidance of Ludwig Hofmann and Leon Fleisher, among others. She won first prize at the 1981 Busoni International Piano Competition and has continued to perform with renowned conductors around the world; she currently teaches at the Munich University of Music.
