GUPPYBOY is an obscure indie pop group formed in Burlington, Vermont, by vocalist/guitarist CHRISZITER, organist SASHABELL, and others. Featuring members who would later go on to form THEESSEXGREEN and THESIXTHGREATLAKE, this was a pivotal project that cultivated a psychedelic pop sensibility deep within the American indie scene of the 1990s. They built a melodic sound brimming with the DIY spirit that resonated with the bands associated with ELEPHANT6, garnering a cult following. This 1997 release is their only full-length album. Long out of print, this album has been reissued as a 2-CD deluxe edition featuring previously unreleased tracks and songs not included on the original album. This album shines with gem-like melodies born from an intimate, lo-fi recording environment that feels like the DIY underground atmosphere of the time has been vacuum-sealed. It is a masterpiece where the pastoral harmonies that would later lead to THEESSEXGREEN coexist in a magnificent balance with a quirky pop sensibility. “YORK,” where gentle guitar strumming and a warm organ quietly intertwine; “AVALONBALLROOM,” shrouded in a psychedelic, ethereal atmosphere; “HOLIDAY,” with its soothing “la-la-la” chorus, and “WASHINGTONSQUARE,” whose melancholic melody strikes a chord—these 20 gem-like indie rock tracks showcase a universal pop sensibility. Beneath the lo-fi texture lies the magic of pop songs that resonate across the ages. A masterpiece that has lost none of its luster as a hidden gem of ’90s U.S. indie rock. It’s a milestone that deserves a place in the collections of not only fans of the ELEPHANT6 scene but all guitar pop enthusiasts.
