Minimalist music born in Japan from the 1980s to the 1990s, ambient, New Age, and avant-garde music, offering a panoramic view of the rich, yet little-known history of environmental music. In addition to world-renowned masters such as Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Joe Hisaishi, the album features pioneers who pioneered Japanese environmental music, including Hiroshi Yoshimura, Yuro Ojima, and Satoshi Ashikawa. Influenced by Brian Eno’s ambient music and Erik Satie’s “music for furniture,” this unique Japanese musical culture of the 1980s evolved in tandem with architectural acoustics and soundscapes. The collection also includes music that permeated everyday spaces, such as the in-store music at MUJI, a promotional LP for Sanyo Electric’s air conditioners, and Seiko watch commercials. These works represent an era symbolized by “Saison Culture”—music for the environment that emerged through intersections with the corporate culture, architecture, and lifestyles of the bubble economy. This 3-LP set features meticulous curation and liner notes by Spencer Doran of VisibleCloaks, along with artist biographies.
