Erikki-Sven Toer is one of the leading Estonian composers of our time, and the ONDINE label has recorded a concentrated selection of his works. His previous work, Symphony No. 5 (ODE-1234), featured an original sound with big band and electric guitar, and this album includes two concertos with clarinet, The "Peregrinus Extatuatus" is a fusion of vivid motifs of the clarinet and the brilliant orchestral sounds including percussion instruments. Noesis," a double concerto for clarinet and violin, is less humorous and more bitter. The entire piece is a lamenting requiem, with the two instruments' tones intertwining and then merging perfectly in the finale. The intense rhythmic exchanges are also brilliant. Sundqvist has been the principal clarinetist of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2005 and gave the world premiere of "Peregrinus Extatics" with Lintu in 2013. Pekka Kuusisto is one of Finland's leading violin virtuosos. He has performed with numerous orchestras and premiered a variety of contemporary works to great acclaim. Naxos Japan
