Erich Kleiber & the Paris Conservatory Orchestra: Tchaikovsky’s 4th & “Pathétique” This highly anticipated release from the original DECCA master tapes offers a unique take on Tchaikovsky from Erich Kleiber, who demonstrated exceptional skill in performing works from the Classical to Romantic periods. Given that Erich is said to have a keener sense of dramatic effect than even his son in some respects, the artistry of his musical design here is truly remarkable. He delivers a highly engaging performance, making full use of the rich tone of the Paris Conservatory Orchestra. The sound quality is also quite high for a recording of that era; in particular, the Sixth Symphony, produced by Karshaw, features a vivid sound despite being in mono.
