Released on the new Dead Oceans label, Cassandra Jenkins' third album promises to break new ground, drawing on a wider sonic palette than ever before, including guitar-driven indie rock, new age, sophisti-pop, and jazz. It promises to break new ground.At its heart is Jenkins' curiosity about the quarks and quasars that make up her universe, and she further deepens the richness of the album's 13 songs by blending field recordings with an elusive, humorous, devastating, and confessional poetic lyricism. Alchemically at work, Jenkins began recording his next album shortly after completing a two-year tour of his last album, An Overview on Phenomenal Nature. He says, "I started out burned out and depleted, so in the months following the sessions I had a hard time accepting that I didn't like the record I had just made.So I started over," she confesses. With her close musical friends gathered again and producer, engineer, and mixer Andrew Lappin (L'Rain, Slauson Malone 1) behind the board, Jenkins put aside her earlier session and from its ashes, "My Light, My Destroyer" from its ashes. My Light, My Destroyer was a year in the making, but some of the 13 songs on the album had been sitting in Jenkins' notebook for years.Tom Petty's breezy folk-rock classicism, the work of songwriters like Annie Lennox and NeilYoung, the CDs she listened to in high school (Radiohead's The Bends, The Breeders, PJ Harvey, Pavement), David Bowie's Blackstar, and other sonic reference points in her head during the making of the album, as well as influences from writers such as Anne Carson, Maggie Nelson, and Rebecca Solnit, and the work of David Berman. David Berman's work, and others.My Light, My Destroyer is also a group effort, rather than the solitary work of its predecessor, featuring El Kempner of Palehound, Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, Isaac Eiger (formerly of Strange Ranger), Katie Von Schleicher, Zoe Brecher (Hushpuppy), Daniel McDowell (AmenDunes), and producer/player Josh Kaufman (producer of the previous album).Jenkins' friend, filmmaker/actor/journalist HaileyBenton Gates, also suggested the title "Hayley.
