The music of Dorothy Howell (1898-1982) was featured in critic Joseph Holbrook's 1921 Guide to Contemporary British Composers as one of only three female composers he considered important, along with Ethel Smythe and Rebecca Clark. In this album, Rebecca Miller restores Dorothy Howell's little-known orchestral works, most of which have never been published and are rarely performed. Rebecca Miller, a female conductor from California, USA, and winner of the first prize at the Eduardo Maatta International Conducting Competition, has served as Assistant Conductor of the Southbank Sinfonia, Permanent Conductor of the Louisiana Philharmonic, and Assistant Conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, most recently from 2019 to 2023 as Principal Conductor of the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra in Sweden, and is currently Director of Orchestras at Royal Holloway University, Chief Conductor of the Royal Orchestral Society, Chief Conductor of the Bishops Stortford Sinfonia, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Swan Orchestra.On Signum Classics, he has received acclaim for his C.P.E. Bach (Gramophone Award nomination 2014) with the Age of Inquiry Orchestra, Haydn with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, and the music of Aaron Jay Kernis, as well as the BBC He has also recorded Dorothy Howell's concerto for Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto Series (Gramophone Award 2017 nomination), which he choreographed with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
