A warm collaboration between Copeman and Mertens, old acquaintances Ton Copeman, a leading figure in the world of old music, and Klaus Mertens, a close friend and collaborator, perform a collection of Bach's religious songs sung in a relaxed atmosphere with a rich flavor. The album is composed mainly from the "Schemelli Lieder," with a few selections from the "Anna Magdalena Bach's Music Book," as well as solo organ pieces, and the overall composition is based on the connection between the tonality and character of each piece. The "Schemelli Lieder" is a collection of religious songs written by Georg Christian Schemelli (c. 1680-1762) with the help of Bach. Although 69 songs (BWV 439-507) have melodies and bass passages written in proper notation, only three songs (BWV 452, 478, and 505) were written by Bach himself, and the others are said to be existing melodies to which he added bass passages. All of these pieces are homely and intimate, the kind of music that one would enjoy playing with a group of casual players.Copeman has recorded this work on occasion with PHILIPS (Peter Schreier/1991), TELDEC (Christoph Pregardien and Klaus Mertens/1999), and CHALLENGE CLASSICS (Constantin Emanuel/2014 [CC-72263 The warm and tasteful tone of the 1762 organ is also wonderful.
