Messiaen Quartet Copenhagen

Description:

Chamber Music Version! Prelude to the Pastoral Afternoon! The debut album of the Copenhagen Messiaen Quartet, formed in January 2018 by four musicians who work as chamber musicians, soloists, and orchestral players, is now available. The ensemble features the same instrumentation as Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time," which gave the group its name. Marlin Williams-Olsson, violin, who is the second violin section leader of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and plays in the contemporary music group Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble ("Voices of Angels (BIS SA 2344)"), Brahms (DACOCD 875), and cellist Karl-Oska Ustalin, who released an album of Schnittke (DACOCD878). Christopher Huldi on piano and Vikt Venes on clarinet are also part of the Ensemble Nor-Alus, which has recorded Messiaen's music (DACOCD756). Since its formation, the Copenhagen Messiaen Quartet has appeared on Danish Radio (DR) programs and at music festivals in Denmark and Sweden. The January 2020 tour of Sweden organized by "Musik i Syd" also received high acclaim. The program includes works by Debussy. The "Bergamasque Suite," known as "Moonlight," was performed solo, while the "First Rhapsody for Clarinet," "Cello Sonata," and "Violin Sonata" were original performances in which each instrument played with the piano. The "Prelude to the Pastoral Afternoon" will be performed in the "Quartet for Violin, Cello, Clarinet and Piano" version, arranged by members Ustalin and Huldi to reflect the players' personalities and music in the eroticism and arcadian moods of Debussy and Mallarmé.
