High-Quality Classical Chamber Music Woven with the Melodic Beauty of Italy [Overview] ◆ Box Set The Campagnoli collections, originally released in 2014 and 2018 and previously out of print, are now available as a set of three discs at a special value price. ◆ Melodic Beauty in the Nardini Tradition Campagnoli, a virtuoso violinist who toured throughout Europe, was characterized as a composer by a style that emphasized melodic expression in the tradition of Tartini and Nardini. ◆The Fusion of a Love for Opera and Chamber Music Unlike his teachers, Campagnoli was a theater person through and through—having performed in opera houses since childhood—and perhaps because of this, his works frequently feature fascinating operatic elements. After all, he raised his two daughters to be opera singers and even resigned from his position as concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra so that the three of them could tour together for many years—a testament to his deep passion for opera. And it is precisely this operatic sensibility, projected into his instrumental works, that makes Campagnoli’s compositions so unique. [Works] ◆Six String Quartets (CD1) This collection of works was most likely presented to Frederick William II during Campagnoli’s time in Dresden in the 1780s. The performances on this CD are based on a recording made using a critical edition of the autograph score recently discovered at the Berlin State Library; a critical edition of the score was also published in 2017. Although these are string quartets from the Classical period, they feature many free-form sections and are blessed with melodic charm and the delight of variations. ◆6 Flute Quartets (CD2) This collection is believed to have been written toward the end of the 18th century, during the latter half of his Dresden period. The autograph score is housed at the Royal Library in Copenhagen. Written in the Gallant style, with flutes and violins taking center stage, the musical ideas are operatic in character and richly expressive. ◆6 Duets (CD 3) This collection is believed to have been composed around the end of the 18th century, during the latter half of his Dresden period. Like the Flute Quartets, it features operatic material; however, since it is performed solely by flute and violin, the musical style highlights virtuosic elements more prominently than in works for violin, which make heavy use of double stops.
