A pairing of Beethoven’s encore collection and variations that showcase Kemp’s poetic musicality! This two-LP Beethoven album is somewhat overshadowed by his famous complete piano concertos and piano sonatas, but it is a wonderful masterpiece known only to connoisseurs. The “Encore Collection” brings together short pieces such as the Bagatelles, “Anger Over Lost Change,” and “Für Elise,” and Kemp’s nuanced portrayal of each piece’s character is exquisite. The profound depth of Beethoven’s late Bagatelles—reminiscent of tanka or haiku—is masterfully rendered by Kemp’s imaginative piano playing. The playful humor of “Anger Over Lost Pennies” is brought to life with vibrancy, yet never at the expense of dignity. Even “Für Elise”—a piece that has been played and heard far too often—is rendered by Kemp in such a way that the very first note evokes a sense of poignancy and tranquility, as if inviting the listener into another world. Meanwhile, in the “Variations,” he expresses the kaleidoscopically shifting musical ideas that Beethoven presented with such delight—through a rich variety of timbres, variations in touch between firm and soft, stylish rhythms, and exquisite pauses—that the listener cannot help but smile. This is a magnificent performance in which Beethoven’s ever-changing compositional style resonates with the rich expressiveness of the veteran pianist Kemp. In terms of sound quality, consistent with our previous concept, we used audio sources digitized from the original masters at high bit depth and high sampling rates (192 kHz, 24-bit) for the CD master. As a result, you can enjoy a higher resolution and smoother tone compared to previous releases. The cover art features the original jacket design from the first release of the “Bagatelles” and other works on DISC 1. The back cover of the booklet features a color reproduction of the original jacket design for the other album in the series, *Variations*. The booklet includes a newly written introductory essay. This is a collector’s edition worthy of commemorating the 120th anniversary of Kemp’s birth. Volume 2, released this time, is part of a five-volume set being released simultaneously.
