Cipriani Potter was a composer and pianist born into a musical family in London. Although he was unable to study under Beethoven, he received advice from him and developed a deep understanding of German music. He is known not only for introducing and popularizing the concertos of Mozart and Beethoven in Britain as a soloist, but also for his dedication to nurturing the next generation as Principal of the Royal Academy of Music. This album features a collection of his original and witty compositions. The Piano Sonata in F-sharp minor is a captivating work that reflects the influences of Mozart and Beethoven, featuring melodic variations and dramatic climaxes. “Introduction and Rondo Giocoso” is a lively piece written in rondo form. The three toccatas suggest a transition from Bach-style strict counterpoint to Classical structure, while the “Riddle” variations—modeled after the styles of five composers active during Potter’s time (Reiss, Kalkbrenner, Cramer, Rossini, and Moscheles), symbolizing his humorous side. The performance is by Luke Jones, a native of North Wales. He is a prize-winning concert pianist who has performed in Japan on several occasions. Naxos Japan
