Description:
Juszef Wieniawski, younger brother of Henryk Wieniawski, studied in Paris and then in Weimar with Liszt. In the early years of his career, he and his brother worked together as a child prodigy duo, but they eventually became independent, and at the height of their career, they performed over 100 times a year, earning a reputation as one of the leading virtuoso pianists of the 19th century. A prolific composer, he left behind many works that combine Liszt's virtuosity with Chopin's lyricism. Like Chopin, he skillfully incorporated elements of Polish dance into his works, and in his late "Boat Song," he uses Impressionist-inspired harmony to create a nostalgic melody in rondo form. The "Ballade in E flat minor" is a tragic work, published after the death of his brother, in sonata form with dramatic modulations and a somber ending. The "Piano Sonata in B minor" is a magnificent work in three movements that is rich in tension and makes full use of complex counterpoint. The four polonaises include the heroic No. 2, the brooding No. 3, and the mature No. 4. The early "Brilliant Polka" is a light, technical, joyful dance that has a different appeal from the Polonaise.Pianist and composer Androu Canestra released his debut album in 2022 and won a prize at the Seattle International Piano Competition in 2024, where he is also a soloist.
