Description:
Joachim Raff was a Swiss composer. As a young man, he worked as an assistant to Franz Liszt, where he honed his orchestration skills before establishing himself as a symphonic composer. Today he is best known as a composer of piano music, but he also left important works for the violin, which he mastered in his youth. This second collection contains three sonatas written between 1865 and 1868. The first, No. 3, was dedicated to Ferdinand David, a well-known violinist at the time, and was highly acclaimed when it was first performed in 1866. The entire work is colored with bright and light-hearted music. The next piece, No. 4, is a compact piece written in a single movement. It has an unusual title for Raff, and is composed in an extremely symphonic style, with dizzying developments. The last piece, No. 5, is again in four movements, and is filled with lyrical melodies throughout. The Swiss violinist Kayaley gives a sympathetic performance of this work. Naxos Japan
