Moeran (1894-1950)
Description:
Ernest John Moran (1894-1950) was an English composer. Born the son of a clergyman of Irish ancestry, he studied violin and piano from an early age and entered the Royal College of Music in 1913, where he studied composition with Stanford. He then served in World War I, where he was wounded in the head. This is said to have cast a dark shadow over his life. He left many works in the field of chamber music and songs, but married cellist Piers Courtmore in 1945. They produced masterpieces such as the "Cello Concerto" on this album and the Cello Sonata. The Serenade is a large orchestral work written in 1948, but when it was first performed, the "Intermezzo" and "Forlana" were considered "too long" and were deleted. The original version in eight movements was published in 1996.Like English composers of the same period, Moran was greatly influenced by the folk songs of his native country, and this beautiful music overflows from one simple and impressive melody to the next. The stirring "Deserted Waters" and "Whithorn's Shadow," based on the Whithorn madrigal, are early works, and while they use a complex musical language, they seem to be music that is easy on the ear.
