Hanson (1896-1981) had a smooth sailing life, with a firm position in the American music world and acclaimed works, but the death of his father in 1943 was quite a shock. Overcoming this anguish, Hanson wrote his Fourth Symphony, "Requiem," which was originally composed for his lyrical father. Although his style had always been lyrical, here he returned to romanticism and created a piece filled with deep spirituality. All movements except the second are moving, using the liturgical text of the Requiem, and are more of a cantata than a symphony. He also won the Pulitzer Prize for this work. The Fifth is a single-movement symphony, and as the title suggests, it has a sacred atmosphere. The Elegy, written for Koussevitzky, the man who brought him to prominence, is also an all-encompassing epic poem filled with deep sorrow. Naxos Japan
