Description:
Lord Burnes (Sir Burnes), a British composer, novelist, and painter. His real name was Gerald Hugh Tierwitt-Wilson, and he was the 14th Baron of the distinguished Burnes family. After studying at Eton College and inheriting his title, he worked as a diplomat. Drawing on the experiences he gained while traveling through Europe, and with advice and encouragement from Stravinsky, he taught himself composition and demonstrated his talent as a musician, primarily in the field of ballet music. This album features art songs and piano pieces. It includes witty art songs such as the “Three German-Style Songs” set to poems by Heine, as well as a piano piece based on Burners’ own poem “Lepoisson d’or” (The Golden Fish), which he dedicated to Stravinsky, and “Three Little Funeral Marches,” which vividly capture Burners’ sharp perspective on life. The superb vocal performances are delivered by Ian Partridge, an authority on British art songs. Naxos Japan
