The performance, featuring two of the best opera singers of the day, Baltza and Koenig, is in full Tennstedt mode from the slow tempo setting of the first song, and the profound expression of each song is even more heartbreaking. Tennstedt had recorded Mahler's complete symphonies with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on the old EMI label starting with No. 1 in 1977, and completed his recording of the numbered symphonies with No. 8 in 1986.The recording of the "Song of the Earth" was made during those sessions in 1982 and 1984, after the recording of No. 4 (May 1982) and No. 6 (April and May 1983), and before the recording of No. 8 (April and October 1986), which was the last remaining recording. However, the Earth Song was not included in the original set of the complete symphonies and was not released until 1992, about 10 years after the first recording. There is a theory that there were parts that needed to be re-recorded, but whatever the circumstances, it is undeniable that listeners' reactions to this album, which was suddenly released after Tennstedt's Mahler had peaked to worldwide attention, were slightly different from those to the symphonies that had been released up to that point.
