An album featuring three previously unrecorded works by Saariaho, recorded by her longtime friends. The “Sarikoski Song Cycle,” consisting of five songs, sets to music poems by the poet Pentti Sarikoski (1937–1983) that explore the disconnect between personal ego and society/the public sphere, as well as the hopes he harbored in the French countryside. Originally composed for piano accompaniment and later orchestrated, the work was completed just before Saariaho was diagnosed with a brain tumor. “Vista” was conceived during a drive south on Interstate 5 in California, heading toward San Diego. The title is taken from “VistaPoints” (viewpoints, scenic spots) road signs, and the warm sound of the piece is the result of the sense of liberation she felt upon completing the opera *Innocence*—a project that took three years—combined with the majestic scenery along the Pacific coast. “Three Preludes” is a collection of songs for soprano and organ. It is one of Saariaho’s early works and the only one in which she set biblical texts to music. Having studied the organ in her twenties, she composed a modern and virtuosic organ part for this piece. The organ at the Helsinki Music Center used for this recording was funded by a donation from Sariahko. The sincere performance is by Anu Komsi and Sakari Oramo, a husband-and-wife team who were close friends and collaborators of the composer. Naxos Japan
