Description:
[Chamber Music by “The Paganini of the Cello” Ronberg, a Contemporary of Beethoven—Performed on Period Instruments!] Cellist and composer Bernhard Ronberg was born in 1767 into a family of musicians who served the Bishop of Münster. Having mastered such exceptional technique that he was hailed as the “Paganini of the Cello,” Ronberg contributed significantly to the improvement of the instrument and pioneered new performance techniques. His performances are said to have had a major influence on Beethoven’s compositions. He performed alongside his cousin Andreas—who was an equally accomplished violinist—throughout his life, earning enthusiastic acclaim from large audiences. The brothers were both members of the court orchestra of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne in Bonn, and it appears they sometimes performed string quartets together with Beethoven, who played the viola. His friendship with Beethoven continued thereafter, and he is said to have joined the orchestra for the premieres of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and “Wellington’s Victory.” As a composer, he left behind several symphonies, as well as concertos and chamber music centered on his own instrument, the cello. This CD features three chamber music works featuring the cello. The Quintet in G major is a four-movement work—with a dance movement and a slow movement sandwiched between an Allegro and a Rondo—and has a playing time of about 30 minutes. All five instruments take turns in solo roles, giving the piece the feel of a condensed Classical-era concerto symphony. The Divertimento for Flute and String Trio is a single-movement, potpourri-style work in which technically demanding and brilliant melodies alternate with lyrical and graceful ones. The equal treatment of each instrument and the effective use of pizzicato are particularly striking. The Grand Trio was dedicated to Count Anton Radziwill, who played the cello and was the husband of the sister of Prince Louis Ferdinand, King of Prussia. At times, the violin and viola take on an accompanying role to highlight the cello. The Ardinger Ensemble, founded by German historical flutist Karl Kaiser—who serves as a flutist with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Camerata Köln, is an ensemble that performs Classical and Romantic chamber music on period instruments using the performance practices of the time. Here, they deliver a magnificent performance that brings out the distinct character of each piece through exceptional technique, intimate ensemble playing, and superb musicality, vividly reviving Ronberg’s captivating chamber music works.
