While several names are mentioned in the history of the Vienna Philharmonic as legendary concertmasters, this reissue CD compiles recordings by Arnold Rosé (Rosé), who can be considered the pioneer among them. Although these recordings were made about 100 years ago, they still convey a sweet sound and eloquent performance. Born in Iași, Romania, in October 1863, Rosé studied under Karl Heisler at the Vienna Conservatory. After graduating in 1879, he made his debut that October, performing with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of Reinecke. In April 1881, he performed Goldmark’s Violin Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Hans Richter, and the director of the Vienna Court Opera (now the State Opera) invited the 17-year-old Rosé to serve as assistant concertmaster and first soloist. The following year, he founded a string quartet bearing his name. Brahms praised them as surpassing even the Hermesberger Quartet, which was considered one of the finest of its time. From 1888 to 1896, he also served as concertmaster of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. The conductors with whom Rosé performed in Vienna—both as concertmaster and, at times, as a soloist—included Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Arturo Toscanini, Franz Schalk, Felix Weingartner, Adolf Busch, Clemens Krauss, Hans Knappertsbusch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, and many others—truly the very embodiment of the Vienna Philharmonic’s glorious history. In addition to Brahms, Strauss, and Mahler, he was involved in many works by Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Korngold, Weigl, and others. However, his career in Vienna did not have a happy ending. On January 16, 1938, as Nazi rule loomed over Austria, a concert performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 conducted by Bruno Walter (recorded by EMI) marked the end of his time there. Thanks to the efforts of Karl Frisch, he subsequently moved to London, where he frequently performed with Myra Hess. With her support, he continued his activities, including reforming his own string quartet, and passed away in August 1946 at the age of 83. (1/2) Naxos Japan
