Ravel and Shostakovich by the Busch Trio, whose series of recordings of Dvorak and Schubert have been well received. The works by these two contrasting composers, Ravel inspired by dances from his Basque roots and Shostakovich written in memory of his friend Ivan Sorelczynski, have different origins and personalities, but both feature a passacaglia in the third movement, and both also feature a passacaglia in the first movement and a passacaglia in the second movement. Although different in origin and character, both have in common a passacaglia in the third movement, and both are overshadowed by World War I and II, respectively. The Busch Trio has captured these works, both of which have the power to move audiences deeply, in a single album with a very natural flow. With their typical fresh expression and deeply engraved shadows, the trio succeeds in clarifying the characteristics of each piece while opening up new aspects of these works. Naxos Japan
