Description:
The 120th anniversary of Abravanel's birth and the 30th anniversary of his death. Maurice Abravanel] Maurice Abravanel was born in 1903 in Thessaloniki (present-day Greece, then a territory of the Ottoman Empire). His mother was born in Portugal, and his father was a member of a prominent Spanish-Jewish family. The family moved to Lausanne, Switzerland in 1906, where Abravanel studied music and conducted an orchestra at the age of 16. In 1923, he made his conducting debut in Paris. He went on to become a guest conductor at the Paris Opera and music director of the Balanchine Ballet Company in Paris and London. When he was invited to conduct at the Sydney and Melbourne Opera houses, his three-month contract was extended to two years, and he was well received. In 1936, he made his debut as the youngest conductor ever at the Metropolitan Opera. At the time, Abravanel was both praised and criticized for his novel interpretations of well-known repertoire. He was also in a state of so-called workaholism, and it is reported that he once conducted five operas and a total of seven performances in nine days. In such circumstances, Abravanel began to seek an environment in which he could work more intensively. He was very successful and served as Music Director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra from 1947 to 1979. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to improve the orchestra through recordings and tours in the U.S. and abroad, and his 1963-74 recording of the complete Mahler symphonies for Vanguard attracted international attention as the first complete recording by an American orchestra.(1/2) Naxos Japan
