[“The World Is All a Joke!” Gardiner’s Heartfelt Production of *Falstaff* Takes the Stage!] The setting is Windsor during the reign of Henry IV. The story follows the chaos that ensues when Sir Falstaff—a heavy drinker and womanizer—sends identical love letters to two women, Alice and Meg Page, while simultaneously depicting the parallel story of how Alice’s daughter, Nannetta, and her lover, Fenton, find their way to each other. Based on Shakespeare’s play *The Merry Wives of Windsor*, this opera features a libretto written specifically for the production by Arrigo Boito. *Falstaff*, for which Arrigo Boito wrote the libretto based on Shakespeare’s play *The Merry Wives of Windsor*, is a masterpiece imbued with pathos even amidst laughter—a work that Verdi, then nearly 80 years old, composed “for himself,” having tasted both the bitter and the sweet of life. At the premiere of this new production of *Falstaff* at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, directed by Sven-Eirik Bechtolf, the applause reportedly did not subside after the performance ended, and the final fugue was repeated. Praise was also heaped on the singers, particularly Nicola Alaimo, who sang the title role of Falstaff. The singing of the four women in key roles—including American-born Irene Perez and veteran Sarah Mingalt—was also noteworthy. And above all, the conducting by John Eliot Gardiner, who specializes in this work, was superb. While Gardiner has previously recorded this work in 1998 with the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, this performance with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra—including the chorus—boasts a superb execution with meticulous attention to even the finest details.
