Description:

Bruckner continued to revise his symphonies long after completing them, with the result that several manuscript versions and printed editions exist of the same work - and telling them apart is one of the great pleasures for the committed Brucknerian. This project sets out to record all nineteen versions of Bruckner's eleven symphonies by 2024, the bicentenary of the composer's birth. It begins with the Sixth, the one symphony that exists in a single version, and uses the most recent (as yet unpublished) critical edition - a point of considerable interest. Markus Poschner, chief conductor of the Bruckner Orchester Linz since 2017, draws a performance marked by a weighty, richly grounded bass-string sound. In the first movement, listen for the contrast between the tautly shaped first subject and the softness of the second. The second movement is limpid and grave, the oboe melody of the first subject exceptionally beautiful. The third movement is filled with breathtaking excitement, and in the finale the handling of the dotted rhythms is superb, the flexible tempi driving the music towards its climax. The Japanese domestic edition includes Japanese liner notes by Yutaro Ishihara, a member of the International Bruckner Society. About #bruckner2024 A project from the Vienna-based label Capriccio to record every version of every Bruckner symphony, under the supervision of Paul Hawkshaw of the Yale School of Music, a leading authority on Bruckner scholarship. The scores of the New Bruckner Complete Edition are to be used throughout; this first instalment, the Sixth, uses "Williamson NBG III/1: 6", currently in preparation for publication. Markus Poschner conducts throughout, with the Bruckner Orchester Linz as the principal ensemble and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra also taking part. [On #bruckner2024] What sets this series apart from all others is its determination to reflect the very latest scholarship. Building a complete cycle around musicological research rather than around a conductor's preferences or an orchestra's circumstances is, in fact, remarkably difficult. Here, however, Dr Paul Hawkshaw serves as adviser, and the academic underpinning is thorough. Wherever possible the performances use scores published, or due to be published, in the New Anton Bruckner Complete Edition (Korstvedt's edition of the Fourth, Gault's of the Fifth, Hawkshaw's of the Eighth, and so on). #bruckner2024 offers a way of hearing a century of accumulated Bruckner scholarship, and it will surely satisfy both our ears and our curiosity.
