Glenn Goult and Friedrich Gulda were two of the leading pianists of the second half of the 20th century. As teenagers, Gould studied composition with Joseph Marx and developed a Romantic style, while Gould was more inclined toward the Viennese School of Music. The "String Quartet" composed in 1955, at the beginning of Gould's career as a pianist, is a large work with a rich atmosphere in the style of Schoenberg. The Gould String Quartet, composed in 1951, is also based on Romanticism, but Gould continued to produce a variety of works, creating his own unique style as a composer.
