Description:

Planet Ilunga, based in Brussels, Belgium, was launched in 2013 and specializes in reissuing Congolese music. Core fans of African music may be familiar with the label's archives, which have featured Franco, Dr. Nico, Joseph Kabasele (Grand Kalé), and other greats who have graced the history of Congolese music. To commemorate its 10th anniversary, the label has released its most ambitious project to date. The label has decided to release a detailed and extensive anthology of the legendary Congolese music label Ngoma in both 3CD and 3LP formats. This compilation collects rare recordings from Ngoma, one of the five major Congolese labels at the time, from 1948, during the former colonial rule of the Belgian Congo, to 1963, when the country was enjoying a period of hope and independence from Belgium. Ngoma was founded in 1948 by a Greek, Nicolas Jeronimidis, and after his early death in 1951, the label was further developed by Nikis Cavvadias and Alexandros Jeronimidis, and by 1971 had left over 4,500 recordings. By 1971, the label had produced more than 4,500 recordings. Ngoma produced three great stars, Manuel Oliveira (later Doriveira), Wendo Kolosoy, and Leon Bukasa. In addition, such renowned musicians as rykembe (thumb piano) player Antoine Mundanda, clarinetist Casango Antoine, saxophonist Albino Calombo, and guitarist Tino Barrosa have also made their names known through recordings made at Ngoma.
