In the early summer of the 11th year of Meiji (1878), O, the head of the Kyoto Guard, gives Makimachi Misao, the orphaned son of his predecessor, a mission to stop the "Kyoto Destruction Plan" hatched by Shizuo Makoto, the mastermind behind the assassination of Sir Okubo. This is the search for Himura Kenshin, the man who was once known as the Battousai the Manslayer and supported the Meiji Restoration behind the scenes. Misao travels up the Tokaido Highway to find the man who may know the whereabouts of his love, Aoshi. Kenshin was also on his way to Kyoto for the same purpose as Ou. Although puzzled by the gap between the terrifying image of the Battousai he had imagined and the reality, Misao joins him along the way, and the two finally confront Shizuo in the village of Shintsuki. Kenshin denies Shizuo's claim that he needs power to destroy the current corrupt government and create a new world. Shizuo smiles, and puts his friend Sojiro Seta in charge of the sword.
